Cornbelly's and Cousins

How'd they know?

This one says something about this spot being saved for the lady that hasn't shaved her legs this week...good thing it was already taken...

All set to have some fun, until the one on the end found out we weren't getting pumpkins that night.

Cousins!

Getting buried in corn is way better than getting buried in sand! Plus, its like I always say, it is lots better to reach in your pocket for a piece of gum and find some stow-away corn than to find stow-away sand.

This one here takes his job of navigator very seriously and did not want to bother with stopping for a photo (when I told him this one didn't turn out and he would have to pose for another he was already moving on...needless to say, I got this one and the next one was of him telling me there wasn't time, we were on a mission...), luckily there were plenty of willing leaders and we made it through the David Archuleta corn maze unscathed and none the worse for the wear. They have his music being piped into the maze as loud as possible, it was fun to sing along while trying not to get lost in his ear canal, or worse, nostril!

Only in Utah would you find a pumpkin carved like President Gordon B. Hinckley.

Rock Candy Recipe/Directions---Have FUN!!!

Table sugar crystals, magnified 100 times

Rock Candy on a stick

Rock candy is a simple sugar candy that can double as a science experiment. The process can take up to a week, but it’s fun to watch the sugar crystals growing over time. Note that the exact quantity of sugar syrup you will use depends on the size of the jar you have. If you want to make several pieces of rock candy, use multiple jars and skewers, and double or triple the sugar syrup solution as necessary.

Ingredients:
2 cups water
4 cups granulated sugar
1/2-1 tsp flavoring extract or oil (optional)
food coloring (optional)
glass jar
skewer or thread (see below)

Preparation:
1. Prepare your materials: wash a glass jar thoroughly with hot water to clean it. Cut a length of thick cotton thread a few inches longer than the height of the jar, and tape it to a pencil. Place the pencil across the lip of the jar, and wind it until the thread is hanging about 1 inch from the bottom of the jar. Attach a paper clip to the bottom of the thread to weight it and ensure it hangs straight down. Alternately, you can use a wooden skewer as the base of your rock candy, and use clothespins balanced across the top of the jar to clip it into place.

2. Wet your thread or wooden skewer, and roll it in granulated sugar. This base layer will give the sugar crystals something to “grab” when they start forming. Set the thread or skewer aside to dry while you prepare your sugar syrup.

3. Place the water in a medium-sized pan and bring it to a boil. Begin adding the sugar, one cup at a time, stirring after each addition. You will notice that it takes longer for the sugar to dissolve after each addition. Continue to stir and boil the syrup until all of the sugar has been added and it is all dissolved. Remove the pan from the heat.

4. If you are using colors or flavorings, add them at this point. If you are using an extract, add 1 tsp of extract, but if you are using flavoring oils, only add ½ tsp, and make sure you don’t stand right in front of the pan—the scent can be very strong as it rises in the steam. Add 2-3 drops of food coloring and stir to ensure even, smooth color.

5. Allow the sugar syrup to cool for approximately 10 minutes, then pour it into the prepared jar. Lower the sugared string or skewer until it hangs about 1 inch from the bottom.

6. Carefully place your jar in a cool place, away from harsh lights, where it can sit undisturbed. Cover the top loosely with plastic wrap or paper towel.

7. You should start to see sugar crystals forming within 2-4 hours. If you have seen no change to your skewer or thread after 24 hours, try boiling the sugar syrup again and dissolve another cup of sugar into it, then pour it back into the jar and insert the string or skewer again.

8. Allow the rock candy to grow until it is the size you want. Don’t let it grow too large, otherwise it might start growing into the sides of your jar! Once it has reached the size you want, remove it and allow it to dry for a few minutes, then enjoy or wrap in plastic wrap to save it for later.

• What makes the crystals grow?
Two different methods will contribute to the growth of the crystals on the string. You have created a supersaturated solution by first heating a saturated sugar solution (a solution in which no more sugar can dissolve at a particular temperature) and then allowing it to cool. A supersaturated solution is unstable—it contains more solute (in this case, sugar) than can stay in a liquid form—so the sugar will come out of solution, forming what's called a precipitate. This method is called precipitation.

The other is evaporation—as time passes, the water will evaporate slowly from the solution. As the water evaporates, the solution becomes more saturated and sugar molecules will continue to come out of the solution and collect on the seed crystals on the string. The rock candy crystals grow molecule by molecule. Your finished rock candy will be made up of about a quadrillion (1,000,000,000,000,000) molecules attached to the string

Grateful Thursday

I have been taking photos to document the things I am grateful for this week (although a couple weren't from this week, sorry). Here they are again in random order-

My family, and finally being close by-
My sister Niki, my niece Zaneel, and me at Zaneels birthday party yesterday.

Me and Z and our kiddos. How fun is that, she and I grew up together and now our kiddos are growing up together! Awesome.
Poor Dawson had a tummy-ache...to much yummy birthday food.

A fun outing to see Cats...first stop? TACO BELL!!! It is our favorite fast food place and there is not one anywhere near us, so strange as it seems, this was a special treat!

We had a blast, who knew watching a bunch of adults dressed up in cat costumes acting like a bunch of cats would be entertaining? Not me thats for sure, I have always been a little embarassed for them...not anymore though! WE loved it!

A wonderful breakfast made up of all my favorites, made by one of my favorites, Rylie...

The coolest new bike in the entire world...according to (one of) the cutest little girl in the entire world...according to her mom...

Finally having the grass they promised us 7 months ago...but i'm not bitter...(notice the pile of wood just outside the front door? That is covering a huge deep hole, lovely huh?)

Successful science experiments...

...and being the most popular house in the neighborhood

The coolest park we've found, so far...

The never-ending views in Utah

Being able to be grumpy in the middle of having a blast...

A fun place to swim pretty much all to ourselves! There is a huge pool off to the side you can't see in the pictures, and hardly anyone is ever there now that school has started. We're getting spoiled.

Grumpy again...

New CONTACTS!!!!

This little girls amazing memory. She and I sat here for an hour talking about where she got each one of these and their names...

and sisters that want in on the action. Paige and HER Pet Shops...

The familiar sight of walking shoes by the front door...

Best of all? A second pair of walking shoes by the front door...thanks for being my partner, Tori. I love you.

Just Wondering

You know how sometimes you wake up in the middle of the night with a migraine, and so you take your medicine and then suffer in silence until you can finally fall back to sleep just in time for your hubby's alarm clock to start its morning non-sense, and even though it doesn't hurt quite as bad after you get up and take a bath (and then a shower so you can wash your hair) it happens to be the day that you go swimming for school, and you also have to make a stop at Wal-Mart first to pick up things for your assigned “finger food” cause tomorrow is Super-Saturday and you get to make some cute Halloween decorations, but secretly you are thinking you don’t really need one more painted pumpkin or Witch boot but you love super-Saturday so you are determined to go, and today is also your much needed (and anticipated) hair appointment that you have to go to cause your roots are sticking out over an inch and a half, and you even put make-up on this morning cause you don’t want to be the only ugly person in Utah county even though it even hurts to touch your eye lashes (and brushing your teeth is an even worse experience), and you know that it is going to be really loud and hot at the pool but you don’t want to kids to miss their exercise, except for your oldest one who recently got contacts, so this week she is refusing to swim because she doesn’t want to have to go without her wonderful new eyes, and you don’t really want to make her feel sad today so you say fine (although you don’t really mean it), and your darling beloved husband stepped really hard on a huge rock in his bare feet when he was taking out the trash last night and now he can barely walk and you are wondering how he is doing?

Ya, me too. Wish me luck.
